Az EUDEC (European Democratic Education Community) 2008 februárjában alakult és azóta egy gyorsan növekvő hálózat, amely a demokratikus oktatás és iskoláztatás iránt elkötelezett iskolákat, szervezeteket és személyeket fog össze. Egyik alapítótagja és veztő egyénisége, Leonard Turton, 2002 szeptembere óta a Summerhillben tanít. December elején találkoztam Leonarddal, hogy az EUDEC-ről beszéljünk a hírlevél cikkéhez és pár perc beszélgetés után teljesen nyilvánvalóvá vált, hogy Leonard küldetést teljesít: hírét viszi és támogatottságot szerez a demokratikus oktatásnak.
Leonard a hatvanas éveiben jár, Vancouverben végzett egyetemet, majd a St. Catherines tanárképző főiskolát Kanadában és 1971-ben sikeres demokratikus iskolát (nem bentlakásos) alapított Toronto közelében. Ezt követően sajátos nevelési igényű gyerekekkel foglalkozott és dolgozott a Niagara Ifjúsági Központban is (olyan súlyos érzelmi problémákkal küzdő gyerekek kis csoportjával, akiket kirúgtak az iskolából). Ezzel egyidőben alapított egy otthon-tanulást segítő központot (The Children’s Learning Centre) saját lánya és más pedagógusok gyermekei számára. Ezután Leonard egy hagyományos merev belvárosi állami iskolában tanított Kanadában. Demokratikus iskolai gyakorlatokat vezetett be: autoritást adott a gyerekeknek, választási, döntési lehetőségeket és megmutatta a diákoknak, hogy hogyan működtethetik maguk a saját demokratikus gyűléseiket. Demokrácia Klubnak (?Club House Democracy) nevezte el és rövid idő alatt 6 osztály és 150 diák vált a tagjává. Ezekkel a demokratikus módszerekkel az iskola átalakult.
2006-ban Leonard elhatározta, hogy létrehoz egy európai demokratikus iskolákat összefogó szervezetet. Egy hétig Lengyelországot járta, majd más demokratikus oktatókkal találkozott a Sands Schoolban Devonban. Az alapító munkálatok (melybe számos summerhilli diákot bevontak) hónapokon át folytak: 2007 márciusában Németországban, Lipcsében kezdődtek és 2008 februárjában fejeződtek be. Az első éves Eudec konferenciát a Lipcsei Egyetemen tartották 2008 júliusában 25 ország több mint 400 résztvevőjével. Leonard úgy látja, hogy ugrásszerűen megnőtt az érdeklődés a demokratikus oktatás iránt az elmúlt néhány évben: nemrégiben meghívták Horvátországba egy egyhetes beszélgetéssorozatra tanárképzőkre, Dániába workshopokra (Anna-Ramm-mal, egy volt summerhilli diákkal) és karácsony előtt Litvániába, ahol bemutatták a Summerhill filmet (közkívánatra kétszer!) és Leonard nagy közönség előtt beszélt, ahol az oktatási miniszter is jelen volt. „ – Megindító élmény volt, ahogy az emberek elsírták magukat a film végén és mohón keresték a lehetőséget, hogy többet megtudjanak a demokratikus oktatásról. Sok szempontból Kelet-Európa és a Balti államok nagyon termékeny talaja a demokratikus oktatásnak... mivel ott az emberek csak nemrég szabadultak fel. Úgy vélem a demokrácia számukra még értékesebb.” – mondja Leonard.
Az Eudec következő lépése országonkénti szervezetek kialakítása, Leonard és Martin Roberts a Sands Schoolból az Eudec Egyesült Királyság-beli egységét tervezi. „ – Elszántak vagyunk abban, hogy a következő 10-15 évben komoly hatással legyünk a brit oktatásra. Reméljük, hogy összehozunk egy turnét néhány diákkal és beszélünk Summerhillről, Sandsről és a demokratikus oktatásról.” A fiatalok bevonása az Eudec munkájába nem szokatlan – az egyik dolog, ami a szervezetet egyedülállóvá teszi az a diákok aktív szerepvállalása minden szinten, akár az Eudec Tanács tagjaként, akár konferenciaszervezőként vagy a szervezet programjainak résztvevőjeként. 2011 nyarán a Sands School otthont ad egy együttes Eudec/Idec eseménynek és ez remélhetőleg fontos momentum az Egyesült Királyság-beli új Eudec és a brit demokratikus oktatás terjesztésének a köztudatban.
Néhány az EUDEC sok fontos célja közül:
1. hirdetni és támogatni a demokratikus oktatást, mint ésszerű választást a demokratikus államok iskolái számára; megteremteni a törvényhozásban a jogot demokratikus oktatási intézmények alapítására és látogatására; támogatást és segítséget biztosítani a demokratikus iskoláknak és kezdeményezéseknek.
2. elősegíteni az információáramlást európai demokratikus oktatási intézmények között és kapcsolatot teremteni az iskolák között.
3. tájékoztatást és programokat biztosítani főiskolák, egyetemek és képzések számára, hogy a jövőbeni tanárok megértsék a demokratikus oktatás alapjait és mindazt, amit jelenthet tanárok, diákok, az oktatás és a demokratikus állam számára.

In February 2008, the European Democratic Education Community (EUDEC) was founded and is now a fast growing network of schools, organisations and individuals dedicated to the democratisation of schooling and education in Europe. One of its founding members and its senior statesman, Leonard Turton, has been teaching at Summerhill since September 2002. I met with Leonard in early December to discuss EUDEC for the newsletter and after just a few minutes chatting, it became very apparent that he was a „man on a mission" to spread the word and gain support for democratic education.
Now in his early sixties, Leonard attended university in Vancouver and then a teacher training college in St. Catherines, Canada, and in 1971 set up a successful democratic day school near Toronto. Following this, he worked with children with special needs, and also with the Niagara Centre for Youth Care (small groups of children with severe emotional problems who had been excluded from school). At the same time, he started a home schooling centre ... The Children‟s Learning Centre ... for his daughter and the kids of other teachers. Leonard next taught in a traditional classroom of a tough inner city state school in Canada. It was here that he introduced the democratic school practices of giving kids real authority, choices in important decision making and showed the students how to run their own democratic meetings. He called this Club House Democracy and soon there were 6 classrooms and 150 children involved. The school was transformed by these democratic methods.
In 2006, Leonard decided to network to try and set up a European democratic school organisation. He travelled for a week in Poland, and then met with other democratic educators at Sands School, Devon. Starting in Leipzig, Germany in March 2007, founding work was done over many months, ending in February 2008 ( and involved several Summerhill students). The first Eudec annual conference/general meeting was held at the University of Leipzig in July 2008 and was attended by more than 400 participants from 25 countries. Leonard has seen real interest in democratic education grow by leaps and bounds over the last few years and has recently been invited to Croatia for a full week of talks in teacher colleges, as well as Denmark for workshops, (both with Anna Ramm, a former Summerhillian) and just before Christmas to Lithuania, where the film Summerhill was shown (twice, by popular demand!) and Leonard did a talk to a large audience that included the Minister of Education. ¡°It was a very moving experience, with people crying at the end of the film and hungry for the chance to know more about democratic education. In many respects, Eastern and Baltic Europe is very fertile ground for democratic education ... since people have so recently broken free of control themselves I think that democracy is all the more precious to them¡±, said Leonard. Eudec.s next step is country chapters, and Leonard and Martin Roberts from Sands School are about to begin planning for Eudec UK. ¡°We are serious about having a profound impact upon British education in the next 10 to 15 years. We hope to do a tour with some students and talk about Summerhill, Sands and democratic education.¡± The involvement of young people in Eudec is not unusual - one of the things that makes the organisation so unique is the active role played by school students at all levels e.g. as individual members on the Eudec Council, in conferenceplanning and in the organisation of programmes. In the summer of 2011 Sands School will be hosting a combined Eudec/Idec and that will hopefully be an influential moment for an increased awareness of the new Eudec in the UK and democratic education in Britain.
Some of the many important purposes of EUDEC are
- to support and promote democratic education as a sensible choice for schools of democratic states.to establish in legislation the right to found and attend democratic educational institutions and to provide aid and support to democratic schools and start up groups.
- To facilitate the exchange of information between democratic educational institutions in Europe and to create connections between schools.
- to provide information and outreach programmes for colleges and training institutes to give future teachers a practical understanding of the basics of democratic education and what it can mean for teachers, pupils, educational environments and democratic states.
